Making a Will

For many people the thought of making a Will spurs them on to find any excuse not to and self denial of one's own mortality is often the cause. A Will however, should be treated as a moveable feast and should be altered along with lifestyle changes. The following are reasons for making/reviewing a Will:-

  • a change in your status, i.e. a recent marriage, divorce or the death of a partner;

  • if you are in a second marriage where there are children from previous relationships as well as in common;

  • if you are single and living with a partner (with or without children in common) where the principal assets including the house, the family home, are in your name only;

  • where you are married without children and your spouse has a raft of relations you would not wish to inherit if you predeceased him/her;

  • where you are single and have no particular family members you would wish to inherit your estate;

  • if you die without a Will then your estate will be divided up in terms of the prevailing law of intestacy which could result in hardship and misery for your dependants.
