Macdonald Henderson are proud to have sponsored a cycle of Scotland’s North Coast 500 in four days which took place from 4th – 7th May 2018.

The team, (comprising experienced riders from the Coatbridge Clarion cycling club, with guests including MH’s Head of Corporate, David Beveridge), covered over 512 miles in four days with over 30,000 feet of climbing.

The team was raising funds in support of St Andrew’s Hospice and the Catherine McEwan Foundation respectively. St Andrew’s Hospice provides specialist palliative care to people living with life-limiting illnesses ; money raised by the Catherine McEwan Foundation is split between two main causes – Crohn’s & Colitis UK, the national charity, and the Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity.

The other sponsors of the cycle were Commercial & Asset Finance (with Alan Anderson representing the firm in the team) and Trident Lifting Solutions.

The cycle itself was an epic undertaking:

Day 1 - 142 Miles

The riders set off from Inverness taking on the infamous Bealach-Na-Ba around 74 miles in on the first day. With a distance of 5.7miles, a height gain of 2053ft and 20% it proved a testing challenge for the team, in wet and windy conditions. Leaving Applecross behind, the team continued up to Gairloch, staying at the Gairloch Sands hostel.

Day 2 - 150 Miles

Setting off in the morning the riders passed through some of Scotland’s most scenic areas on route to Durness taking in Poolewe, Ullapool and Kylesku Bridge to name a few, before finally getting the chance to put their feet up at the Durness Youth Hostel and chilling on Scotland’s northern coast line.

Day 3 - 125 Miles

Again up bright and early the cyclists made their way along Scotland’s northern coast line through places such as Bettyhill, Thurso, John o’ Groats and Wick before settling for the night at Forse of Nature (a historic stately home and craft centre) near Latheron.

Day 4 - 95 Miles

The last day saw the riders set off southwards down the coast, through Tain and Dingwall and finally into sunny Inverness to a heroes’ welcome from friends, families and supporters.

Velo Scotland

The team was provided with first class professional support by Velo Scotland who have developed a range of products and services around a unique pro team car concept offering, including rolling car support, mechanical support, radio provision, food stops (in this case provided by the charity’s supporters), insurance and route risk assessment -
